Laboratories that have switched
Laboratory Testimonials More and more laboratories have decided to STOP providing the Friedewald Calculated LDL and have converted to providing a measured LDL. Below are three Case Studies that show how and why three laboratories made the change. TESTIMONIAL: A Large Regional Hospital on the East Coast How: By setting up two lipid panels. Panel 1 contained Cholesterol, HDL and Triglycerides but no calculated LDL results. Panel 2 contained Cholesterol, HDL, (measured) LDL, and Triglycerides. "...we performed a study... we decided that the Friedewald calculation is inaccurate too often... we just feel the direct method provides the best information." TESTIMONIAL: Large City Hospital in metro New York How: As soon as a direct measured LDL became available the laboratory replaced the Friedwald calculated LDL in their Lipid panel with a direct measured LDL. While this added to the cost of the Lipid panel, the laboratory was now able to offer a better test result. "...we were actually surprised at how well this was received. The doctors knew that many of their (out)patients did not fast before the test." TESTIMONIAL: Medical Center in western USA How: Pathologist met with ordering clinicians and reviewed inherent problems with calculated LDL. Lab discontinued offering calculated LDL, but does offer a direct LDL. "...our Pathologist insisted we provide the direct, measured LDL. He said there was simply too much uncertainty with the calculated." Laboratory testimonial data available upon request. |
